You can see her changing so much throughout her book, despite the way she remains kind of. It's easy to dislike her character, but somehow I managed to enjoy her so much. She was like a walking Grandma Motley, but with a younger face and a bit too much of a quick-mouthed personality. She was bitter, but seemed more old-fashioned than she should've been for her age. She wasn't the character I thought she'd be. You don't even think about it, only reading as the stubborn Margaret.Ī personal note: I loved Margaret. For example, The Book Thief, That Scatterbrain Booky, etc, etc. There's a certain edge to this book that almost makes it hard to believe it's set in the same time as other books I've read about young girls during the 1930's and 1940's. I turned the cover, read it, and thought the same, only thinking that it would be set in a different era.
I first saw this book cover (actually, not the one above, but a different one) and assumed a typical, funny teenage book about love and friendship.
